EU Regulator ESMA Alerts on Crypto Risks to Finance

Europe's financial watchdog, ESMA, is concerned about crypto's growing links to traditional finance. They highlighted tokenized stocks, DeFi hacks, and prediction markets as potential risks that could affect the wider financial system, urging caution as these connections deepen.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), a key financial regulator in the EU, recently pointed out concerns about the increasing links between the crypto world and traditional banking. ESMA specifically mentioned risks from tokenized equities, which are like traditional stocks but exist on a blockchain. They also cited potential issues from decentralized finance (DeFi) exploits, where hackers can steal funds from automated financial systems, and prediction markets, where people bet on future events. These areas, ESMA believes, could create problems for the larger financial system if not managed carefully.
